read moreThink back to your own school days.
You probably don’t remember every worksheet, school trip, or every test score.
But you’ll remember your teachers.
The ones who believed in you, and made learning exciting.
Because here’s the truth every parent instinctively knows:
The single biggest factor influencing your child’s success at school is the quality of their teachers.
One study found that just one year with a very effective maths teacher can lead to pupils making 40% more progress than if they are taught by an ineffective one.
That’s not a small margin, that’s a different trajectory.
So the real question isn’t just:
Are your child’s teachers good?
It’s also:
How do you know they’ll always be exceptional?
At Nord Anglia schools, teacher professional development is structured, global, and embedded into school life.
Every school invests locally in its teachers. But being part of a global family brings something powerful: shared expertise and learning across 89 schools in 37 countries worldwide.
Through Nord Anglia University, the international education group’s professional learning platform, nearly 100% of teachers have accessed development this year, with thousands of teachers engaging every month on honing their teaching skills.
But this isn’t abstract theory.
“We start with the theory and we look at the research,” says Jenny McWalter, Nord Anglia’s Group Head of School Professional Learning, “but our main focus is putting it into practice because what teachers want to know is ‘How will this help me in the classroom?’”
Being part of a global community of educators means that teachers also learn directly from one another.
“It holds a mirror up to your own practice,” says Adam Lewis, a primary English as an Additional Language teacher at Nord Anglia’s British International School Hanoi. “By observing other teachers, you soak it all up.”
And across its global network of schools, Nord Anglia’s Teaching Fellows share expertise between schools, ensuring innovation doesn’t stay in one classroom.
It spreads.
Even the best teachers don’t stand still.
“Teaching and learning are always changing; it never stands still,” says Adam Lewis.
“For many of our parents, the classrooms they were taught in and the experiences they had will look very different to classrooms today. We are always learning more about how children learn, how they develop, and how we can best meet their needs.”
Modern classrooms are more interactive, more collaborative and more personalised than ever before.
“As a teacher, that’s an extremely skilful thing to have to learn how to do,” says Lewis. “It is much more important that you know what you’re doing. The stakes are higher.”
Which means teacher development cannot be occasional.
It has to be continuous, which is why it’s deeply woven into every aspect of school life across Nord Anglia’s family of schools.
Dr Claudia Costin, member of Nord Anglia Education’s Education Advisory Board, has studied what most affects student achievement.
“The point is that this can be improved, not only through making the career attractive, but through professional development. If we continually emphasise the importance of classroom practice and develop a dialogue between theory and practice, it has the power to create much better teachers.”
Teacher quality is not fixed. It can be strengthened.
Which is why Nord Anglia’s schools take professional development seriously to give children a long-term advantage.
This commitment becomes especially visible when schools introduce new curriculum.
At Nord Anglia’s Hamelin-Laie International School in Barcelona, teachers are being trained on International Curriculum Association programmes across all age groups.
To protect professional learning time, the school restructured its week. On Fridays, lessons finish at three o’clock, giving teachers two hours of compulsory development and planning.
“We recognise and value the fact that if we want change to happen, we have to change our structures to make it happen. Parents have also been very supportive of this move,” says Principal Sarah Osborne-James.
She is clear about why it matters:
“There is a clear link between academic outcomes and the knowledge and expertise of the teacher. If we want to raise academic standards, but also students’ social and emotional development, we must equip teachers with the right tools and skills and ensure these are continually updated”.
When comparing schools, many factors come into play.
But if you want to understand long-term student success, ask:
How does this school really develop its teachers?
Because:
• Confident teachers create confident learners.
• Skilled teachers personalise learning more effectively.
• Motivated teachers inspire curiosity.
• Supported teachers stay and grow.
At Nord Anglia, teachers’ professional development is part of the fabric of every school. Because great teachers make great schools.

Some visits leave a mark.
Others confirm a direction.
The IB Evaluation Visit (March 25–27) at H-FARM International School Vicenza did both.
Over three days, the Evaluation Team immersed themselves in the life of our school: visiting classrooms, speaking with teachers, engaging with students and connecting with families. What they found was not only a well-structured IB school, but a living, breathing community.
The feedback was clear and deeply meaningful. The visit was described as one of the most enjoyable and inspiring in the evaluators’ professional experience, highlighting the expertise of the leadership team, the passion and the commitment of our teachers, the warmth and authenticity of our students, and the genuine involvement of our families.
This result also confirms how deeply our school is aligned with the values of the International Baccalaureate: a commitment to inquiry-based learning, international-mindedness, critical thinking and the development of caring, responsible individuals. What emerged during the visit is not only adherence to a framework, but the ability to truly live these principles in everyday school life.
During the final reflection, Denise Michel, IB Chair and PYP Programme Leader, shared a collection of words that captured the essence of what the team experienced:
These words are more than feedback. They are a reflection of a community that lives the IB values every day.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Evaluation Team:
PYP: Denise Michel, Sally Yassin,
MYP: Eif Phillips, Ivana Popa
DP: Elke Heinicke, Nazanin Nikanjam
A big round of applause also to the H-FARM International School Vicenza community.
This visit was not a finish line, but a powerful moment of reflection and growth.
Because at H-FARM International School Vicenza, learning is not only something we do.
It is something we live, together.
This week, as our school engaged in the IB Evaluation visit, our MYP and DP1 students came together for a meaningful assembly to mark the UN International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
The moment offered students the opportunity to reflect on the historical impact of the transatlantic slave trade and to honour the memory of its victims. Through shared reflections and discussion, students explored how this legacy continues to shape our world today.
The assembly also encouraged students to connect history with the present, considering the importance of promoting equality, justice and human dignity in their everyday lives. Particular attention was given to the concepts of equity and fairness within our school community, reinforcing the role each individual plays in building a respectful and inclusive environment.
Taking place during the IB Evaluation week, this assembly was a powerful reminder of what an IB education truly stands for: not only academic rigour, but also the development of international-minded, principled and caring individuals.
Moments like this remind us that education is not only about understanding the past, but about shaping a more conscious and responsible future.
